We are delighted to announce that one paper from the Virtual Environments Lab (VELab, Prof. Young Ho Chai) has been accepted to the 38th Annual ACM Symposium on User Interface Software and Technology (UIST) [LINK]. Title: Controlling Avatar Locomotion with Minimal Wrist and Finger Gestures Authors: Kyung Min Kim, Se Hyeok Yoo, Young Ho Chai Abstract: We present a low-cost, portable system—Finger-Computer Interface (FCI)—that enables intuitive avatar locomotion in virtual environments using minimal hand gestures. By combining inputs from an Apple Watch, a finger-worn motion sensor, and a webcam, users can perform walking, backward stepping, and jumping without needing full-body tracking systems. The system is designed to remain responsive even in constrained or visually challenging environments by utilizing complementary signals from multiple devices. A preliminary user study suggests that the interface offers high usability and natural control, particularly for jump and speed-based interactions. |
